Thomas Jefferson frequently wrote to his 13 grandchildren but especially to his 9-year old granddaughter Cornelia Jefferson Randolph. He sent her a handwritten book called "A Dozen Canons of Conduct in Life", which is reproduced in this miniature. All of these canons are still applicable today, such as "Pride costs us more than hunger, thirst and cold" or "When angry, count 10 before you speak; if very angry, 100".
