Anatole France (1844 - 1924), was a French journalist, poet and novelist who won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1921. The Well of St. Clare is a collection of short stories that are mostly from the middle ages that are satire and the hypocrisy of religion. The illustrator, Frank C. Pape (1878 - 1972), was a well-known English artist and book illustrator whose black and white illustrations are whimsical and beautiful throughout.
