Augustus Le Plongeon (1826 - 1908) was an American archaeologist, photographer, and author who, along with his wife, Alice Dixon le Plongeon, traveled to Yucatan in 1873 to study ancient Mayan sites. Their purpose was to explore the idea that the Maya had links to the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Atlantis. Le Plongeon's ideas were not well received; however, he was ultimately recognized for his photographic legacy of the ancient ruins.
