After resigning his army commission from Spain while serving in Canada, Ruxton was happy to spend his life in the Far West and document his experiences with the mountains, the scenery, mountainmen, and the Indians. First published in Blackwood's Magazine in 1848, the "wildness of the adventures related excited suspicions in certain quarters as to their actual truth and fidelity," although Ruxton only admitted to softening the characters but not at the sacrifice of truth.
