First edition, first state, intermediate "B" with no picture of the author on page 441 but with the caption on p. 443 reading "The St. Louis Hotel." Brown cloth, stamped in black and pictorial gilt on cover and gilt lettering on spine, spine ends frayed, some edge wear and corner bumping worn through to the boards, coloring to front and back endpapers, spines cracked, many black and white illustrations throughout, in good condition. This book tells of Mark Twain's travels along the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans, many years after the Civil War and his time as a steamboat pilot, also on the Mississippi River before the Civil War. Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) was the first to use fingerprints to solve a crime in a work of literature (Ch. 31).
