[Nuremberg, Germany]: [Bauer Family], n.d. (ca 1840). (32 accordion pages). Approximately 1 3/4 x 1 7/8". Paper folder and modern cloth-covered slipcase holds 32 accordion pages, unfolded in concertina fashion, first page tipped in and slightly chipped, several old repairs to the reverse of the strip, all pages show a hand-colored engraved figure in national costume with title in English, German, and French, in very good condition. Likely from "The Earth and Its Inhabitants" which would have been housed in a box with a fine pocket globe. A facsimile globe has been included here.
Attributed to the Bauer family of German globe makers, this very scarce item was intended as an educational toy, produced for the English and European markets. The figures include: Sandwich Islander, Newsealander, Peruvian, Mexican, Eskimos, Caraibe, Iroquese, Greenlander, Calmuck, Tartar, Armenian, Laplander, Turk, Grecian, Russian, Hungarian, Egyptian, Nubian, Negro, Hottentot, Kurgese, Chinese, Arabian, Persian, Tyrolese, Austrian, Italian, Spaniard, Portuguese, Scotchman, Frenchman, and Englishman.
